No image editor required! No cropping required! A tip from the Geneartogy website on creating portraits that work well: Crop the picture in a rectangular shape- portrait layout. Crop to show just head and shoulders. Typically you’ll want to crop so as to have the mouth in about the center of the picture. You’ll also want to make sure you leave sufficient empty space on the top and sides so that when a rectangle photo is placed in an oval photo frame, none of the face or head gets cut off.
